Some babies find it very distressing when left alone. By putting baby to sleep this way it alleviates the stress on both mother and baby.
You could also incorporate some music into this routine.
Start by putting some gentle music on. Hold baby to your chest and gently sway. As baby relaxes, place baby in crib/cot and begin to pat bottom. Baby will soon begin to associate soft music with relaxing and will be able to be put to bed and left.
If you are having trouble putting baby down for a sleep, there are a few things that can help in relaxing baby.
Try sitting next to baby and patting gently on the bottom until baby has calmed and is close to sleep. Slow the patting down eventually stopping but leaving hand gently on baby. Once baby is sleeping, quietly leave the room.
If this method does not work, gently massage baby with baby massage lotion. (Try to use a non-scented natural lotion). Gently talk to your baby in a soothing voice. Soft music can also be played. Start with baby facing up and begin the massage from the feet upwards. Always remember to rub the abdominal area in a clockwise position as this helps baby's bowel
movements. Once you have completed the front, roll baby over and gently stroke back in downward motions. A few minutes should be enough. Dress baby and place in crib/cot. Baby should drift off into peaceful sleep.
Sometimes, it isn't always easy to calm a distressed baby especially down the street or in the car. I have
found gently running your forefinger along the bridge of baby's nose and up between brows in an up and down motion is very calming. If possible make eye contact with baby as well as stroking.
(try this on yourself and see how relaxing it is).
